About

You’ve stumbled across Flyingtroll.com (if that wasn’t already obvious).

Flyingtroll.com is the personal blog of Jonathan C Lane, just one of several Jonathan Lanes available online today.  Truth be told, I’ve been blogging at this URL for almost a decade now, but recently I decided to blow away my entire site and start fresh.  In my past life, I had a lot to complain about, and did it publicly (on occasion).  I don’t need those memories anymore, I’ve moved beyond that.  If you’ve landed here because of some old link or reference, sorry.  I didn’t keep a copy of the old content, it just wasn’t important to me anymore.

Where did “Flyingtroll” come from, you ask?

My mom writes stories.  When I was a kid, I thought the idea of a tooth fairy was way too girly (hey, I was on a Star Wars-induced testosterone high for most of my youth), so mom wrote me a story about Fred the Flying Troll.  Fred was my tooth fairy.  Years later, after the aforementioned other Jonathan Lanes snapped up all of the .coms and .nets relating to our name, I put out a plea for domain name ideas.  My mom, who is also my only regular reader, suggested “Flyingtroll”, which happened to be available.

What can I expect?

Not much.  It’s best that way, so that you won’t be disappointed.

Seriously though, Flyingtroll.com has always been a bit of a weird site.  On one hand, I’m an active father of two insane boys that eat up the vast majority of my time.  On the other hand, I do reasonably geeky things like build web sites, write books on the topic, and run a business.  The topics on here cover all of those areas.  I’ve never puzzled over why I can’t build a huge readership here — being a hardcore geek, I’d be bored out of my tree reading about some other geek’s kids.  Likewise, geeky topics don’t appeal to all (hi mom!)  Hopefully you can find what you’re looking for without running into too much of what you’re not looking for.

Quick Rundown:

I’m a 30 year old father of two.  I live on Mayne Island, BC (that’s in Canada) now, before that I lived in Lethbridge, Alberta for just over a decade, and prior to that, grew up in Calgary, Alberta.

I’m quite outspoken on topics that I care about.  I love Mayne Island, and really couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

I had blogged previously about whether the HST can legally exist based on the Canadian Constitution. Seems that a few others have noticed this now too, I just received this e-mail from “Fight HST”:
