Get ready for it: BCFerries rant…

Rachel was over in Vancouver today picking up some odds and ends. She’s now trying to catch the return ferry to the island and… oh! Cancelled. The wind is too strong.

Alright, so maybe this is just one of those things that I still need to get used to with living on the coast, but that’s pretty freakin’ arbitrary. I could swear we’ve sailed in stronger winds before, and we’re not talking a 10 foot pleasure craft. The boat from the mainland over to the Gulf Islands is big (sorry, trying to look up the stats on BC Ferries web site, but that thing is so dreadful, it’s hard finding any information.

Argh! It’s just so frustrating being completely at the mercy of a profiteering shit hole of a company. For the most part, two thumbs up to the employees — you’re all a great group. I can’t imagine how you’ve managed to keep your heads up working for such a dumb place.

Once again, thanks to the Skjeis for offering hospitality to a stranded traveller. Don’t know what we’d do without you guys.

Ergh. Don’t even get me started on Paypal. Let’s just say that they won’t be used as my online payment processor for the stuff that’s coming from Industry Interactive.

Yeah, I had some great e-mail correspondence with BCFerries. The gist of it was I was asking if they could publish some guidelines about when they’re likely to cancel ferries (there is NO information on this currently). You know, just really broad stuff like “if winds are 100 kph, we’re probably not sailing” or “if a hurricane hits Vancouver, chances are no boats are going out”. That way people may be able to plan their trips based on the weather a little better.

The response I got back was “no, we couldn’t do that because then people may decide not to go based on the recommendations we’ve made”. Ummm… yeah. In other words, they may lose customers when they cancel sailings, or are experiencing conditions where they’re likely to cancel sailings….
