I’ve been meaning to post about this one for a couple of weeks now:
New Trans-Canada ‘gateway’ bridge opens in B.C.
Yeah, a bridge, thanks for the heads up on that one Jon! The interesting part is that it is 21 months ahead of schedule. That’s almost 2 freaking years!
The personal angle is that the summer I worked for Parks Canada in Field, B.C., I drove “the canyon” at least once a week. It’s a freaky little stretch of road, and I’d hate to do it in the winter. This bridge is amazing. I saw it on the way out to Mayne Island.
Title of the post being “Damned if you do…” the funny part is that this project is a complete sham. I mean, how on earth do you bring in a construction project almost 2 years ahead of schedule? Either somebody was so full of s**t when they estimated the work/end date on this, or that bridge is about as stable to drive across as the leaning tower of Pisa (I’m sure that’s not the case, and it’s that the time estimate was a joke). My instructor for project management would have kittens if he read about this — not because it’s impressive, but because the person who said it will take that long should be fired and banned from the world of project management for all eternity. Maybe it’s a marvel of management, everything on the project just clicked. That would mean that it was estimated with a 21 month contingency then — who the heck needs that much contingency.
Alright, that came off sounding a little rant-ish, which wasn’t the intention. I think it’s great that it’s done. That stretch of highway is terrifying, and anything that can be done to improve it is great in my books.

Oh, sure. Now that I’ve finished travelling to/from BC.
